Inspection capacity without adding headcount.

One inspector covering inventories, voids, quality inspection, condition surveys and measured areas — instructed job by job, priced per report, with no retainer and no minimum volume.

Inspection work is awkward to staff. It arrives in bursts, it is the first thing to slip when the office is busy, and the reports that come out of it are only worth anything if they were produced to a consistent standard by someone with no interest in the outcome.

Instructing an independent inspector solves both problems at once: the capacity is there when the work lands, and the report carries the weight that an in-house one cannot, because it did not come from a party to the dispute.

I inspect. I don't install, treat or remediate.

A firm that inspects and also carries out the remedial work has an interest in what the report says. An installer photographing his own work only ever photographs what suits him. This practice has no installation arm and no remedial supply chain, so there is nothing to upsell and no stake in the outcome. The finding is the product.

Background

Thirty years in construction — around twenty in the specialist interior trades and more than ten managing sites, packages and contracts, with direct responsibility for inspecting subcontracted work against specification and signing it off. The inspection is carried out by someone who has built the assemblies as well as inspected them.
