Thirty years in construction. Around twenty of those in the specialist interior trades — drylining, SFS, partitions and suspended ceilings — and more than ten managing sites, packages and contracts, with direct responsibility for inspecting subcontracted work against drawings and specification, and for signing it off.
That is the reason this practice exists. Sitting on the contractor’s side of the table, the quality record for most packages is produced by the people doing the work: their photographs, of their installation, chosen by them. It is not that installers are dishonest. It is that nobody photographs the part of the job they are not pleased with, and by the time anyone independent looks at it, it has been closed up.
The same problem runs through the whole industry in different clothes. The snagging list produced by the developer. The damp diagnosis produced by the company selling the damp-proofing. The check-out report produced by the agent holding the deposit. In every case the person writing the report has an interest in what it says.
A firm that inspects and also carries out the remedial work has an interest in what the report says. An installer photographing his own work only ever photographs what suits him. This practice has no installation arm and no remedial supply chain, so there is nothing to upsell and no stake in the outcome. The finding is the product.
